Life lines

While hunting for images on the shores of Laguna Beach, I stood still, watching the waves come in and out. In the distance, I noticed a rock peeking out of the water. Timing the break just right, I made my way out to the rock. I aimed to capture the wave rushing over the rock without getting my shoes wet. Knowing I had to sacrifice my shoes, I stepped deeper into the breaking waves. When I got to the rock and took a closer look, I was surprised to find that the rock had more character than I had envisioned. I knew I had found the image that I wanted to make. The etchings in the rock were similar to the life lines of the palms of your hand. While the light kissed the palm of the rock, I captured the imprints of the ocean's touch.

land's end

The Newport Beach pier poses endlessly each day for the many photographers who come to this land's end. It was my turn on this November evening to distill the essence of the pier and its mirrored shore. I waited until the sun dropped into the ocean and patiently stood there until the shore turned to glass. Luckily, the wind was still that evening, and patrons remained on the deck, fishing and enjoying the vibrant tapestry of the sunset.

in flight

Birds in flight at sunset sillouetted against the golden light. What fun it would be to catch the updraft of the wind coming off the shore. Catalina showed its profile in the distance, the sun painted the sky, and the silky clouds brushed through the scene. Washed ashore are the dreams of mermaids.

power

The ocean water explodes against the rocks, leaving a turbulent wake of foam. While many beach scenes aim to soften waves into ethereal smoothness, my focus is different. I wanted you to confront the ocean's unbridled power—to witness the dramatic traces it etches upon the land, to feel the intricate dance of its commanding waves, and the pure, rushing energy it provides.

Traces left behind

Watching the water come in and out, leaving traces of the moon's pull. While walking along the shore in the morning, I noticed the path left behind like a fingerprint from the wave. But unlike fingerprints, they change and are reshaped from the very next wave, eventually being washed away forever. I watched and studied the lines until I was able to capture the very moment when the lines led my eye through the frame. While the sun cast a shadow on the sand, adding a layer of texture, I crafted the image to represent how it feels to walk the empty shores.

empty shores

In today's world, our lives are busy and crowded with so much clutter and energy that screams at you silently. Walking along the shore of this beach, I soaked up the freedom of space and synergy that the ocean waves provided. That pattern of the wave that soothes your mind and calms the soul. It's why we are drawn to the empty shores. I crafted this image to have that image; to remind me of how the water felt on my feet, and how the sound of the waves quieted my mind and calmed the hectic energy.

artistic rush

Remembering that moment when you first put the shell against your ear to hear that rush of the waves. The child inside of you lives on and dreams of the rush of the waves that washed over you as you played in the sand, chasing the wave as it left the shore, to fall into the water and get washed ashore with the next rush of the tide. I knew that leaving the shutter open, to capture the ocean's movement and re-create those moments we dream of, would help me craft those moments and memories for you to play in the sand again.
