painting with light
My upbringing in the high desert, weekends immersed in its embrace, bred in me a deep yearning for that potent time of day: the approaching stillness of night, the sun bleeding across the horizon. I vividly recall the moment—the exact spot where I stood to capture this image. It was sunset, as I drove westward through the Mojave National Preserve. The scene unfolded before me while crossing the desert, just as I neared the Kelso dunes. I pulled over, jumped out of my truck, and stood there, waiting for the sun to just kiss the mountaintop. Click... I took that one shot. The shot that made me fall in love with photography.
I have included this image in my limited-edition series LIFE LINES. If you are interested in learning more, join the community. I would love to catch up and learn how this sunset resonates with you.
layers
Throughout the years, I have traveled to many beautiful locations. Making these images allows me to share the experience with you. Take a moment and peer into the abyss, enjoy the textures in the layers; enjoy how the sun pushes its way through and warms the marshmallow clouds; enjoy the colors the sun creates as it filters through the atmosphere; embrace the joy it affords you.
stars in the sky
Comet NEOWISE (officially designated C/2020 F3) was a comet discovered on March 27, 2020, by NASA's Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) mission. It became the brightest comet visible from the Northern Hemisphere since Comet Hale-Bopp in 1997. I was not going to miss this opportunity to capture a comet that has an orbit of 6000 years. So, I talked my friend into driving into the darkness deep into the wilderness to capture the stars and the NEOWISE comet painted across the sky.
stars in the water
Deep in the ocean, floating jellyfish pepper the dark blue water, flickering like stars in the sky. Bioluminescent jellyfish flutter across the scene and light up the water with iridescent colors. These reminded me of the stars that light the sky and the comets that orbit the Earth. While visiting the Long Beach aquarium, I was able to photograph these beautiful jellies.
